Dr. Richard Blackburn is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Leeds. His research group within the Centre for Technical Textiles conducts fundamental research into the physical chemistry of sorption, natural products extraction, polymer chemistry, cellulose chemistry, colour chemistry, textile chemistry, and dyeing & finishing. All research is concerned with making more sustainable products and processes in the fields of materials science, coloration and finishing. He has over 40 journal publications, 2 books, and 3 patents, and has worked collaboratively with government (DEFRA, TSB, DTI, NHS) and industry in nearly all his research, most notably with Arch Chemicals, BASF, Bayer BioScience, Boots, DyStar, Lenzing, NatureWorks, and Welland Medical. Richard is co-founder and director of the industry association The RITE Group, which is dedicated to Reducing the Impact of Textiles on the Environment.
Dr. Patrick McGowan is a senior lecturer in the School of Chemistry and his skills are crucial for catalyst design and characterisation. As well as his teaching and administrative responsibilities, he also leads a research group which specialises in the development of new anti-cancer drugs and catalysts. He is the author of more than 40 publications and works in collaboration with a range of different Universities, as well as companies and charities including BP Chemicals, Johnson Matthey Ltd., Protherics Ltd., and Cancer Research U.K.
Professor Chris Rayner is Head of Organic Chemistry in the School of Chemistry and has a particular focus towards the development of environmentally benign methods for organic synthesis and materials processing. He has interests in novel continuous reaction technology (including photochemically induced reactions), natural product extraction and utilisation, and the chemistry of carbon dioxide.
Dr. Chris Pask has several years’ research experience in various areas, ranging from investigations into new metallic and non-metallic magnetic materials to main group and transition metal chemistry. Prior to becoming senior scientist at DyeCat, he worked for a small nanotechnology materials company specializing in infrared applications.
