Hair Dyes
In Europe , more than 60% of women and up to 10% of men dye their hair, at a frequency of 6-8 times per year (European Commission, 2006). The majority of this is done using permanent hair dyes – those that dye the hair for a period of 20+ wash cycles.
To achieve the permanent colouration, a particularly harsh environment is required to give good colour performance. This means that traditional permanent hair dyeing products often contain substances that are potentially hazardous and can damage the hair significantly.
Because these chemicals are used on the skin and hair, some users of hair dyes experience allergic reactions to some of the materials contained in the products. This can range from mild irritation to examples of users having severe reactions, sometimes requiring hospital treatment.
DyeCat have a technology which is looking to remove these hazardous substances from hair dyes whilst retaining the performance of the permanent hair dyes.
DyeCat is aiming to
- Formulate neutral pH hair dyes (kinder conditions to the hair)
- Remove ammonia, resorcinol and PPD amongst other ingredients which are known to cause discomfort or allergic reaction in some users
- Combine the DyeCat technology with natural ingredients, replacing synthetic materials in permanent hair dyeing products
